AN ORIGINAL DEEP, RICH, LIGHT BROWN PATINA ON THE HAND CARVED WOODEN HAFT. 21 INCHES LONG OVERALL. THE HAND FORGED BLADE ALONE MEASURES 6 INCHES X 5.5 INCHES. A 31 INCH LONG NATIVE BRAIN TANNED BUCKSKIN DROP HANGS FROM THE HANDLE; DECORATED IN GREEN, YELLOW, ROBIN’S EGG BLUE, DARK RED & WHITE TRADE SEED BEADS. WHITE ERMINE FUR AND BEAVER FUR WITH 4 BRADED BRAIN TANNED BUCKSKIN DROPS HANG ON EITHER SIDE OF THE DROP; 2 ON EACH SIDE OF THAT FUR. THERE ARE 28 OXIDIZED GREEN TACKS, DIVIDED INTO 4 LOCATIONS, ON THE HANDLE. OXIDIZED GREEN COPPER WIRE IS WRAPPED AROUND THE HANDLE THAT HOLDS THE DROP IN PLACE AND IS ALSO WRAPPED AROUND THE HANDLE RIGHT BELOW THE AXE HEAD. NATIVE BRAIN TANNED FRINGE IS ON THE HANDLE’S BUTT AND ON THE TOP OF THE BEADED DROP RIGHT ABOVE THE OXIDIZED GREEN COPPER WIRE WRAPPING. THE HAND CARVED WOODEN HANDLE IS ORIGINAL AND HAS NOT BEEN REFINISHED. ALL IN ALL THIS IS A GREAT OLD 19TH CENTURY NATIVE AMERICAN ANTIQUE. The pipe tomahawk (also referred to as a hawk) is a type of single-handed axe from North America, traditionally resembling a hatchet with a straight shaft.
The name came into the English language in the 17th century as an adaptation of the Powhatan (Virginian Algonquian) word. Tomahawks were general purpose tools used by Native Americans and European colonials alike, and often employed as a hand-to-hand or a thrown weapon. The metal tomahawk heads were originally based on a Royal Navy boarding axe and used as a trade-item with Native Americans for food and other provisions.
The Algonquians in early America created the tomahawk. Before Europeans came to the continent, Native Americans would use stones attached to wooden handles, secured with strips of raw hide. Though typically used as weapons, they could also be used for everyday tasks, such as chopping, cutting or hunting.
When Europeans arrived, they introduced the metal blade to the natives, which improved the effectiveness of the tool. Metal did not break as readily as stone and could be fashioned for additional uses. Native Americans created a

, the side opposite the blade, which consisted of a hammer, spike or a pipe. These became known as pipe tomahawks, which consisted of a bowl on the poll and a hollowed out shaft. These were created by European and American artisans for trade and diplomatic gifts for the tribes.
